Had this new laptop about 4 months now and on fullycharged battery it only lasts 1 to 1.5 hrs, is this right? As advertised it said about 6 hrs. Have i been conned?

That is probably the maximum length assuming in low power config with out a high brightness setting on the lcd panel and not doing anything that is high on graphics/storage use so light browsing.
Can't say what the minimum is.

If it is the "battery life is down to 10% save your work or change to mains" message that you are going by - The battery calibration tends to drift - do not ask me how you reset it but there is a way

Battery life is notoriously 'generously claimed' in ads, but I have to say, 1- 1 1/2 against a claimed 6 does sound piss poor. Was it an old model? (Which might have been hanging around for awhile...batteries do degrade.) I got crap battery life from a mobile phone once - took it back after 3 months and they replaced it, no question. The replacement lasted probably three times as long. If you bought it from a shop you can go back to, I'd definitely go back and discuss it with them.

Mine lasts about an hour with normal use, it would last a lot longer (about 3 hours ) with all engergy saving features enabled (wi-fi turned off, display on dim, graphics performance reduced) but it's kind of useless then!

I think mine is claimed to be 6 hours but gives me around 2 hours a bit less if I'm using it all the time; it has also seemed to reduce with age. I quite like my laptop it gives me a loud audible indication that I need to swap to mains. My Mother's is a pain though you'll only get 1/2 an hour out of the batteries and its battery low indication is quite easily missed

I get about 2hrs out of mine, though that's without putting it in low-power mode (switch to onboard graphics, dim screen etc). I'm sure it'd go longer without all the bells & whistles that drain the battery quicker than Magnatom can recite a car number-plate to camera

Your laptop will allow you to set different power schemes. You should check this, and make sure you have selected an option that puts you into a low power mode when you are using the battery. Also switch off wi-fi when you are not using it as that causes a big drain on power.

If you don't know how to change your power settings someone here can advise.

If you are already on a low power setting you could have a faulty battery. I once had one with a new laptop and was able to exchange it for one which held the charge much longer.

What laptop is it? I would personally expect the battery on a laptop from a well know brand like Dell, HP or Toshiba to last more than 1-1.5 hours, unless you do have all the power hungry features switched on.

A good rule of thumb is that real-life battery-life (usable screen brightness, etc) is about half the manufacturer's claim. As an example, my MacBook Pro 17 claims 8 hours and I get between 4 and 4.5 hours in real life. 1.5 from a claimed 6 sounds like a tired battery unless you have the screen brightness set to maximum?
