I made a cup of tea for Mrs Slim and warned her not to leave it next to the laptop she was using at the time.

"It's OK. I know it's there, I won't knock it over"

Less than two minutes later.....

" OH NOOOOO!!!!!".

I sprint into the kitchen where she'd been working just in time to see Mrs Slim pouring most of a cup of tea out of the keyboard.

Anyway, the laptop doesn't seem to have suffered too badly but there are a couple of keys that don't seem to be working too well (need several presses before they register).

Is this sort of thing fixable at home or do I need to take it somewhere for a keyboard replacement (and at what sort of cost) ?

Anyone else had this sort of thing happen??

Put it somewhere warm, not hot, to dry out properly for a day or two. The keyboard may clear up after a bit of use. It could be a biscuit crumb or something got washed underneath and needs to be pummelled out of existence so the key can work. Unless she has her tea with six sugars in which case it could be gummed up with syrup.

I've killed two laptops and many more desktop keyboards by spilling drinks.

Some of the keyboards have been fixable but the two laptops died there and then. You're either lucky, or they make laptops more resistant nowadays.

I had to replace the keyboard on my Sony laptop. I download a manual/instructions from Sony website technical page (look for your laptop model). The PDF document explained how to remove em replace the whole keyboard. Easy job to do however they are quite expensive though.

Thanks Guys.

I've left it to her to decide how she wants to proceed. I'll do the necessary if she wants to buy the replacement.

Ours got filled by half a can of beer - at a party. Dried out OK, but a few keys were sticky for a while. Try and pop a key off and see if you can wipe it.

Kids spilt drinks on a MS wireless keyboard a few months back - I had to strip that as the liquid got in between the membrane so had to be cleaned and dried out. Works fine now.
