I have a HP laptop, the thing is I switched it on one evening and although it powers up the screen doesn't seem to work.
I know the battery needs replacing could that be the problem ?

HP have a rep of a overheating graphics card. One of ours went and the other is fine........hope I'm wrong about yours, but google it, theres even a few youtube clips

Do you have an external monitor to plug into it ? if not look REALLY carefully at the screen and if you can see a very faint image then the screen invertor that powers the backlight has gone.

It is only usually the ones with a decent graphics card usually an Nvidia and usually the 17" DV range that do that. Which is why it doesnt affect all of them.

I think your right Phil , we bought two the same for the kids, both go hamered in turns of use. Ones still going strong the others now a Dell.

Could still be the invertor.

Just make sure you havent pressed the function key for turning off the screen, on some laptop/netbooks you can turn off the screen so it isnt on when you want to plug in an external monitor.

Well I hate to tell you this but some of the 17" Dells with the Nvidia graphics have the exact same problem.
