Late night flying over Carlisle

Again on the off chance that someone may know. Did anyone in the Carlisle area see or hear aircraft flying low between 23:00 and 01:00 last night? We live just off the A69. There was one plane circled the area about 23:00. We heard the engine noise but could not see anything and then about 23:15 SWMBO spotted three sets of lights from our bedroom window. By the engine sounds, I would say they were heavy transporters. This is unusual in this area.

It's usually RAF Hercules practicing landing at Crosby on Eden Airport. They come behind me (High Hesket) hiding in ground clutter, I'm not sure what the RAF runs as transport but all the one's I recall are the stretched version.

Activity increases when they practice wargames with loads of helicoptes at the Arport.
there was a fair bit of low flying fast jets here late evening last night, guess there was some exercise on, guess they need to train in the dark, not so exciting when you can't see them though.
Most Thursdays we have pairs of Eurofighters etc going over at minimum allowed height of 250' - seriously impressive flying.

Wonderful watching them when you are high in the mountains and they are way below you.

Amazes me how the sheep don't spook when they go over.

No idea, but a couple of weeks ago I got a shock when a low flying plane came almost parallel to us on the A 595 just before thursby. Looked like it was going to land on dalston green!!

OOOhhh. Touchy!

Two things wrong there.
I'm nowhere near Carlisle.
Transatlantic pies to me mean pecan, fruit or other sweet form of pie. They can stay transatlantic now I'm back in the UK.
.... but wouldn't a plane heavily laden with pie crossing the Atlantic towards a landing in Leeds, fly close to Carlisle?

We are on the Spadeadam range attack route, and a few years ago it was a regular assurance to have jets chasing each other but normally when there is a night flying exercise on we are warned. Yes it was probably Hercules or larger and I have been on the Pennine way near Greenhead when they were that low that it was a miracle they didn't take the top off the trig point. The other point is that this is the area where the transatlantic flights do turn. Thus Lockerby could easily have been Carlisle or Gretna.

I think there is an exercise this week up your way and you had a C17 that landed in Carlisle last night and at 23.15 a Voyager from Brize was over your neck of the woods as well.

Certainly heard a heavy aircraft around 2330 last night, and my first thought was a Hercules.Over the last few weeks, late Thursday evening,I have heard Chinooks to the South, probably over say, Dalston by the time I hear them.Coming from West Freugh perhaps?I ll pop out and have a listen later on !

I work across the road really from the airport and there's been a few super Puma helicopters flying during the day, I believe they were anyway lol. So I'd agree it was likely a Hucules or similar on exercise. It was not that long ago the Dutch army were there.

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you ^_^

Below are the NOTAMs for the two green areas north east of Carlisle. Note that the ceiling is only 5500 ft, so they'll be playing with their toys at fairly low level.
