I have a pair of Endura waterproof overtrousers which have sprung a leak on the knee where the rubberised backing has come off. Have tried the time honoured gaffer tape but a dismal failure! Any suggestions on how to affect a permanent repair?

Try a inner tube patch.

It depends on the size of the 'hole'. self adhesive inner tube patches are wonderful things, I have fixed everything from waterproof torn by barbed wire to sleeping bags and even my tent with them! Anything bigger than say a 1p would need something larger and for that I have used very successfully the fortress self adhesive patches that cost £6.99 for 2 larger patches. This stuff www.amazon.co.uk/Mcnett-McNett-Gore-Tex-Repair-Kit/dp/B0038MVP10 which fixed my waterproof trousers after the rather nasty dog attack that ended my world tour. The trousers and repairs are still going strong!
