I noticed some long awaited works to improve the towpath (tarmac) have begun, the sections in question are from Armley>Leeds on the Leeds Liverpool and between the Royal Armouries and Goodman Street on the Aire/Calder Navigation.

Unfortunately it only appears to be resurfacing and not widening, and ononly short stretches, but if you use this canal for commuting every little helps!

For pure comedy value though, they use a picture here that is at least 7 years out of date, 1 or 2 small buildings missing lol

I commute to Leeds from Shipley, mostly on the road as the tow path between Esholt and Rodley and again between Rodley and Kirkstall is shocking. Very muddy, slippery and a pain in the arse. My cross bike is fine on it but i got fed up with having to clean the bike so often.

I've noticed the new tarmac bit on the section approaching the train station and made a mental note to try the tow path commute soon. If for no other reason should be able to clock a course PB ;)

It's a towpath ! If you want to ride around on a billiard table smooth ten yard wide track try the nearest velodrome. If your bike is sooo delicate it snaps in half every time you hit a pebble bin it and buy a real one.
All roads, paths, footpaths [irrelevant here, or should be] and cycleways COULD be made smooth as glass but no one, repeat no one would be prepared to pay the extra taxes to cover the costs, [remember the road tax, which cyclists don't pay anyway doesn't contribute to the road upkeep, or so everyone keeps saying].
I've ridden that route hundreds of times when it was far worse than it is now. It is NOT a cycleway, although cyclists can use it. If it's too tricky looking where you're going and, {horrors !!!] having to slow down sometimes, use the road.

Your wrong on 2 important points - it is a cycle route and it has not been funded with any tax payers money.

The route is actively promoted by Sustrans and LCC (amongst many) as a cycle route - google Aire Valley Towpath Route - in addition to being quoted often as a viable commuting route for those cyclists that would prefer a quieter alternative to the very busy A65 into Leeds. In order for the towpath to serve this purpose, it needs to be of a certain quality, but the reality is (as Paul L points out) large sections that simply make the route untenable as a commuting route.

The second thing you are factually incorrect on is the funding for this (you'd know this if you had read the article) which has come from The Canals and Rivers Trust (a charity I support) and Sustrans (also a charity).

There is also another reason why these improvements are needed - there have been deaths on the route partially attributed to its poor condition. Again google can help you read these if you wish but personally I feel if a route is going to be promoted (for all users) as a safe passage into Leeds then it needs to be of a certain standard.

Lastly, for the benefit of the wider audience, I am in no way suggesting we tarmac every mile of towpath we have. I mentioned I am a active supporter of the Canal and River Trust and I am a keen towpath cyclist. I am well aware of their limitations but I am also aware of their benefits.

So, by all means cycle on a towpath as a bimbly sight seeing ride with all the muck and pebbles you can take (I do and love it), but if councils, tourist boards or an actual cycling charity promote it as a viable multi-user route into a major city then it needs to be of a certain standard.

A couple of weeks ago I took the bike on the train to Steeton & Silsden to cycle back to down the canal/river to Ferrybridge, I have done this loads of times, so it came as a bit of a shock to find all the closed bits, the first was at the Aqueduct at Dowley Gap there is a diversion by the side of the river & you get back on the path at Saltaire, at the start of the diversion I went the wrong way and hit a dead end !
The next obstacle was some fencing across the path at the Charlestown area, but it had been pulled to one side and there were tyre tracks so I carried on to the railway bridge just before Bottom Farm were there was another fence patrolled by a water way worker who would not let me through, he suggested I go up through the woods to the main road as the towpath was closed all the way to Calvery Bridge !
Like a fool I took his advice, what an Epic I got lost in the woods finally emerging at Simpsons Green about 45 minutes later, I then rejoined the Canal at Calvery Bridge only to find the Canal blocked again at Botany Bay in Leeds (to carry out the resurfacing mentioned above) I got back on the canal at the Asda offices and the rest of the ride was uneventful which is just as well as I was completely knackered from the epic in the woods.

The canal trust website informs you of closures, I think it would be wise of me to check this before my next trip ! it seems they get the bulk of the maintenance work done in the winter months.

They do, its because there is less disruption to the boaters as most of them either stay put in winter or are only part time summer cruisers. To be fair the website is fairly up to date and I think they put things on twitter too.

The aqueduct at Dowley was drained and fully explorable a month ago or so, I didnt make it down unfortunately but it was fully explorable:

I saw it on the website about the open day at Dowley, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the aquaduct, so thanks for the picture.

From Kirkstall to Leeds its now completely tarmacked, so a safe, clean and traffic free commute route is now available to all. Elsewhere I'd imagine that would be heavily promoted, in Leeds on the other hand....

Would love to commute that route, I would use Kirkstall road as it looks great with full bus lanes either way and hardly any pot holes, now look at Meanwood road... They have just shortened a RAB approach forcing cars into cyclists, the cycle path a joining the road is slow and mainly through a housing estate covered in glass.

Meanwood Road is a proper mess I agree, it doesnt help that its a hill for half of it and worse if you have to then carry on up Stonegate Road. The path you describe is that part of the councils 'Core Cycling Network'? If so its terrible - possibly worse than the road - as it bimbles all over the show and yes is full of glass, rubbish, dog mess and worse.

I started commuting on the canal route, then once a bit more confident and realising the road is quicker started using Kirkstall Rd 'Quality Bus Corridor' (lol) as its known. Hopefully the improvements encourage more to do the same.

Just found the amount Yorkshire & Humber got from the "Safer cycle routes"

  • east of England: £5.31 million
  • east midlands: £3.17 million
  • north east: £3.29 million
  • south west: £3.09 million
  • north west: £14.77 million
  • south east: £5.57 million
  • west midlands: £1.51 million
  • Yorkshire and Humber: £2.62 million

The biggest county in the country yet we can only get that amount, shocking.
