Hi All. A friend & I are doing the end to end challenge in May of this year in aid of Cancer Research & in desperate need of HELP.Aloud 14 days to complete. Been cycling most my life, as a child couldn't get me off my bike. But the last 25+ years just been cycling to work and back ( about 9 miles total daily) with a bit of leisurely cycling at the weekends. But the last 3 months been taking the long route( about 40 miles daily) & doing a average of 50-60 a day over the weekends in preparation. As for the forthcoming end to end challenge not really got anything planned! We've both sorted are bikes and transport but other then that not really very organized. Been reading web sites for other people who have completed the challenge but didn't really find them of great help. We live in the Telford in the West Midlands & was thinking of getting a lift to JOG cycling home then getting a lift to LE so ending the challenge back at home. Anybody got any views on this?. Are maps the way to go or is it worth investing in a GPS system?. We've not planned a route yet so any help with this would be much appreciated. Anybody know where I can get a list of useful YHA's & campsites?. Thanks All for your help, any comments will be much appreciated. Mike.

I think, you would be better to get a lift to Lands end, then cycle to JOG and miss out home, the reason I say that is that the wind will be behind you, well that’s the theory, but the wind is fickle and blows from which way and that way, if you go via home then you might find it hard to get going again. Plenty of campsites along the route, you can look at the Caravan and camping club web site:

The Caravan Club have some camping pitches on there sites:

The yha site is:

For navigation and camp site finding I used the Phillips road atlas and tore out the relevant pages. Campsites locations are marked on the maps and usually they are self evident as you get to the location. Once or twice I had to ask for directions and one of the sites turned out to be a caravan only site. The only things that i had planned was the the start and end point. Everything else was take it as I found it. I ended up wild camping a few times in each direction.

As for planning a route - to be honest anything that takes your fancy will do the job - just be wary of taking the minor roads in Devon and Cornwall they tend to be hillier than the major roads. While in those two counties any town ending in 'ford' or 'bridge' e.g. Camelford, Exford are normally approached by a descent followed by a climb out of the river valley - see if you can minimise the number of them that you pass through for a flatter ride.

I drew straight lines with a ruler and looked at the roads that approximated to the straight line and modified the route if necessary to accomodate the camp sites.

As for prevailing wind yes the wind probable does blow more frequently from the South West but unfortunately the wind direction does not follow a timetable and there's nom guarantee that it will be a a tailwind on the days that you ride.
