Knowing that my aged brother is a jazz afficionado and was a member of the Lincoln Jazz Club in the 60s, I woke him from his slumbers to watch this prom; it rejuvenated him! The other soloists were superb too - and was that the conductor's brother in the saxophone section?

I was impressed when I saw Dick Heckstall-Smith in Colosseum - although the playing of two saxes simultaneously was a bit, er, flamboyant.*

Barbara Thompson was brilliant; one of my most prized possessions is a signed copy of Heavenly Bodies from when Paraphernalia visited Nottingham in 1986 or thereabouts. Side one of that LP, the Appia Suite, means a great deal to me, particularly as I had a poster of Dominique Appia's Les Barricades Mystérieuses.
On their next visit, I like to think I was ahead of my time, rather than behind it, when I asked why their latest album was only on CD, with no vinyl option.

* an accusation you could never level at Leo Pellegrino
