Not knowing the full facts about this particular incident it would probably be unwise to comment on it specifically. I do hope the victims make a recovery and that the driver learns a very valuable lesson from all of this.

There is a road fairly near me that is a dual carriageway but is limited to 40mph for a very good reason. There is a bend on the westbound carriageway which is a fairly sharp left hander shortly after the crown of a hill. Travelling at 40 through it is never a problem, but at 70 you would be pushing your luck. Before the speed cameras were installed at this point there had been 6 KSIs, all attributed to excessive speeds.

I used to recover cars for the police, amongst uninsured scrotes and the regular unroadworthy we recovered the crashes for investigation and I recovered 2 cars which had rolled at low speed. 1 hit a solid bollard exiting a roundabout and the other clipped a parked car.
both totally at fault, its not so uncommon

It's quite possible, I agree. I think not in the case of the OP's picture though - all the videos I've seen of low speed rolling didn't result in anything like the severe damage seen in that photo.

What I would suggest is that the driver may have been travelling too quickly for the conditions if the family members' comments are correct and the road was wet. I think this is part of a larger speed issue that many people seem to think that if they are below the speed limit then they are driving at a safe speed for the road whatever the conditions.

My thoughts exactly.

It was clearly a case of the nut behind the steering wheel being defective. This is a common fault on a lot of cars unfortunately!

When I was a foolish youth I owned a Mark 2 Golf GTI (the best car I've ever had). I used to enter local car club rallies through the forests of Scotland. One day I was going through a series of bends at roughly 40mph when the front nearside touched the banking. Car flipped over in an instant. Just shows the amount of momentum a car can have even at low speeds

No way was it as damaged as the car in the photo. We just flipped it back over and went on our way. According to the reports it looks like the driver lost it on a minor bend it the road, hit the keb and then rolled over into the garden. Doing well over 60 IMHO:angry:

Here in is part of the problem, 40 mph is not a low speed, even if many drivers think that it is. Modern cars are built to survive such crashes which leads some drivers to think they are invincible and are not constrained by the laws of physics.
