I don't use a Libary, but 'er indoors works in one

For those that still think Public libaries are silent places run by a book nazi, should really take a look.

'er indoors jobs include:

Running a two daily reading classes for up to 30 kids at a time, aged between toddlers and teenagers.
Building vast craft items (full size papier mashe crocodile, pirate ship, trees, Aliens, Gruffalo's etc)
Making 'Blue Peter' style items out of sticky back plastic and loo rolls
Teaching individual kids to read
Teaching OAP's to use computers
Babysitting teenagers
Filling in forms for the semi-literate
Hosting local events, such as neighbourhood watch
Oh yes, and lending out books

I've always got 2 books on the go,1 home and 1 at work,Use the libraries fairly regularly, mostly I order a book on-line and go and collect it when it's available.
Buy a lot of books from charity shops, tend to have a shopping spree a couple of times a year and come home with bagfuls of them.
Love reading and have done since an early age, nothing too taxing though, fiction thrillers, crime, horror etc.

Used to work in a library. Other half still does.

I rarely go to our local library as it's not open when I'm around.

I don't read much. I'm not good with books in the same way an alcoholic isn't good with wine. Once I start one I have to finish it and I'll ignore family and stay up all night. I binge read on holiday, the rest of the time I stick to the internet or books I've read before.

I love libraries. I just wish I went more often. I love taking the kids there but it disheartens me that they are so disinterested and apathetic about it.

This is the problem, what I really want is a silent place run by a book nazi. I know I'm in the minority and can't have my own way all the time, but the library just isn't the quiet and slightly intimidating place that it used to be, and I miss that.

Nope, they've made it DRM'd so you get it for two weeks (or alternate period with some flexibility but not much) and then it 'expires' - see here

Only recently started up but seems very popular; and they are increasing the titles.
I've read about four ebooks (we got them for our train trip round Europe) and Mr SHK had the audiobook of the Ghost to keep him entertained. Both worked flawlessly on Win 7 using the required software.

I wasn't saying whether they were DRMed or not. Just what. It's a topic that interests me. In the past libraries have hinted they wouldn't be able to do this service even if it was DRMed.

I use my local lib. quite often. Last time was Wed. Went to get Cycling in West Country (Sustrans) book.

It wasn't available. Looking forward to read it.

We have a "Discovery Centre"

It has some brilliant evening sessions and my MiL spends hours in there.

Must admit I attend the sessions rather than the books, tapes etc.

Sorry, thought that you were thinking that it was only the books that were outside of copyright because they were too old!

There's a good selection of books out there - including travel books it seems now. I think in the main it's newer releases (for whatever reason) but perhaps as it progresses it'll start to include older books. Of course, newer 'releases' include reprints. One of the books was Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals, but when I looked first it was only that one of his, not any of his older books. Now they've grown two others (Discworld #2 and #3)...

use ours frequently; no so much of late due to where I'm working, but that finishes end of September so I'll be spending a lot more time there. They are a greatly underrated resource.
