Can I tap into your collective wisdom and/or experience.

I'm fed up at work and have decided I need to do something about it. I've also been bitten hard by the cycling bug and want to do a long tour. I've had a long, hard think about it and finally plucked up the courage last week to tell work I want to leave, although I haven't put it in writing yet, the plan being that I'll head over to Canada then the US with my bike. I thought about asking for some unpaid leave but looking at the work I've got on this year didn't think it would be an option. Then I had a visit from one of the senior managers on Friday and it it looks like it is a possibility. I can't decide whether I should burn my bridges as a way of forcing myself to do something different when I get back, or take the option of unpaid leave in case a few months off is the break I need and I come back refreshed and motivated. What would you do?

Surely you might as well leave yourself the oppurtunity to go back to work afterwards, then if you go back for a week or two after the tour and feel the same as you do now you know it times to leave?

+1 to the youngster.
Good to have the option to come back to.

I can understand your thinking behind burning your bridges but I'd not set fire to them if I were you. Your mileage may vary.

With my sensible head on I think that's what I should do. At least it would give me time to apply for new jobs when I'm back. I'm just afraid that I'll get sucked back into my old lifestyle and be back to square one, spending too long on here everyday, for instance, because I've lost all motivation. I don't hate my job, but fell into this career and haven't done anything else since leaving university. I quite fancy the idea of just temping when I get back to experience a few different environments and see what direction I want to go in.

Maybe I sound like a spoilt child and should just knuckle down and be grateful for the good job I have when others are struggling to get anything. I'm in a quandary.
