It makes me wonder what they are up to at 4 in the morning. We had a spell where they could not catch shoplifters because they were busy looking for terrorist. 🤣🤣

I know they have realigned the shift patterns to solve the stupidity of having the same number of officers on duty at 5am on a Tuesday, as were on duty at midnight on Saturday (as was the case when I was serving). So the traditional night shift might be split so that most are working 6pm to 2am, giving extra coverage up to 2am, but a lot less from 2am to 6 or 7am....

We operate in a climate where offenders with a string of serious traffic convictions are given suspended sentences repeatedly. These include driving with insurance

Bloody hell I’ve been driving with insurance for years. I’d better hand myself in now.

As you might know, I am also ex Police. I've been out of it 20 years now but still in touch with others either still serving or recently retired. I think you'll find it HAS changed, and changed beyond recognition. Not allowed to say too much on a public forum, but let's just say they don't have the resources they used to have, to allow the targeting you and I were able to do. Not even at 4am on the night shift! No doubt it is still possible, but on a much smaller scale, and only scratches the surface of the problem.

Re-active rather than pro-active.

This has been going on for a while now with certain offences needing to spiral before a team is put into place to stop it.

Government responded:

The Government takes road safety seriously and keeps the motoring offences under review. That is why a Call for Evidence is being considered.
The Government takes road safety very seriously, and it is at the core of the Department for Transport’s agenda. Ministers are aware of the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of Angela’s daughter and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and loved ones. Every road death and injury is a tragedy for the families and communities affected, and we are working hard to implement policies to help reduce the number of casualties on our roads.
We are strengthening legislation, and how it is enforced. We have completed the biggest overhaul of the Highway Code in decades in 2022, so that vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists have priority in certain situations.
In 2022, we also tightened up the law governing hand-held mobile phone use while driving, so that the police are able to enforce this dangerous offence more easily. We have also increased the is qualification period for those who cause death by dangerous driving or careless driving when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
But we are aware that more needs to be done. We keep the law under review and listen to the concerns of those affected by tragic cases of death or serious injury.
That is why the Government is considering a Call for Evidence on motoring offences. While the potential scope and timings are being confirmed, it is expected it will include issues around drink and drug driving, and the offence of failure to stop and report. There may also be the opportunity to highlight other areas of concern. I would encourage you to respond to it when the time comes.

A covert look at regular intervals of the addresses of those banned may enable police to catch them - or the nosey neighbour reports!
Sadly Part II of RIPA prevents makes such directed surveillance unlawful.

In any case, the few coppers that are left now spend most of their time doing the paperwork that the civilian casebuilders did before they were let go a few years back as a cost saving measure.

Anyhoo, IMHO all driving bans should be for life. Firstly, it takes a good bit of effort over a period of time, or one almighty great act of idiocy to get a ban somits difficult to do accidentally. Secondly, if I had my shotgun ticket taken off me due to my behaviour I would never get it back, so why shoukdmdrivers of large, dangerous, kinetic weapons ever be allowed on the road again? Every 3 points should also bring an automatic 28 day driving suspension. If any other class of villain were treated with such tolerance or leniency the Mailista's would be baying for someone's head, so why are road villains allowed to do it?
