I had it dipped down so the main circle was maybe 5 foot in front of the wheel

Five feet is certainly aimed close enough not to dazzle, but do you not find it impedes your progress?
You will need to use the edge of the beam to see potholes far enough off to have time to dodge them, and having a very bright and close main spot will upset your night vision enough that the beam periphery isn't as usable as it might otherwise be.

No issues over the last 2-3 winters
