If you need a light to see with, then you are looking at more than £50 for a starter light.

Good starter lights are the hope vision 1 and magicshine MJ-808

Bought a good rear light for £18 it's 1 watt it's that bright bet you can see it from half a mile away, been to local bike shop and he has a 500 lumens front light for £100 looks a good robust light, but is 500 lumens very bright

No , its about what you need for the unlit lanes. Many here including me like the 900 rated ( read 600 real ) lumen Magicshine you can now pick up for £35 ish , plenty of threads on the forum about them. These lights do take a few weeks to come and can be had quicker but you will pay a premium for it.
Another is the hope vision 1 which runs on normal AA batteries but you will need to use good quality rechargeables as it will east your batteires

My magicshine is used for my commute along with a "normal " light i have set to flash as a "see me " light on normal roads .

smart r1?

I run the smart R2 with 2 big LEDS which is very similar to the rsp astrum.

This is used in conjuction with a standard rear light on each pannier bag to give my a wider light pattern.

I'd recommend Magicshine MJ808E. I ride along completely dark country lanes on my commute and this light is superb. Cost me £50.00 from dealextreme website, but money well spent. So bright that cars stop. They assume another car is heading their way. You can see comfortably in any environment with this light - potholes etc not a problem - easily avoided, even at speed.

Totally agree, at about the same price as the Cateye EL530 it is the best choice IMHO

I got my Mag-Lite torch and taped it to my helmet , Mag Lite are a good strong beam , works great on dark country lanes ,

Used to ride with a lad who had a cave helmet (you know the strange lot that go down pot holes) that had twin torches on , the advantage is when going down dark country lanes the light is exactly where you are looking and not lighting up the banks as you go through tight bends
