Following RTA,I have been left with only 85 degree bend on my leg/knee.This prevents me from being able to ride a bike,as I cant bend sufficiently to rotate the left peddle.
My Q is,has anyone ever,or know anyone, who has had an adjustable shaft made so as to compensate for this disability?ie a shorter shaft, leading to the peddle?
I hope someone undrstands what iam talking about.

There is a thread on something similar to this on the CTC Forum; about 3-4 weeks ago in Does anyone Know?

Hi leg, and welcome!
I think the term you are after is "Crank" which has the pedal at one end, the right hand crank has a chainring attached and the left one does not.
Crank arms do come in different lengths, to accomodate children, women and very tall long-legged types. Typical length for an adult is 170mm measured from the centre of the crank where it joins the axle for the bottom bracket, to the centre of the pedal axle hole. I've seen 160 mm to 175mm crank lengths as standard. What might be useful is to talk to some specialist bike makers, I found these which are made for the rear Tandems for instance, there seems to be 2 different pedal positions at 110mm and 140mm... something like that might be suitable. The company 'TA' seem to make a very wide range of cranksets for a wide variety of applications.

Hope that helps.

One of our very own forum stalwarts is the man you want to talk to, RedCogs. He has a very similar story to your own I believe and also uses a funny crank thing going on. I'll see if I can find some info for you.

I like the pic,I will enquire locally about differant sized "cranks".

His crank is actually hinged, have you read the thread in the link?

This is the relevant post:

On the cranks Bollo - i'm a disabled cyclist - a RTA in 1966 left me with a right knee which has only 15% bend. Thus, cycling was impossible until i discovered someone on the internet in 2001 who could fashion an appropriate 'hinged crank'. Initially i used derailer gears, but that didn't work out well because i dont have much power on the right hand side, which seemed to affect efficient shifting. The Rohloff eliminated the problem - because it allows gear shifting easily at all stages - uphill, down dale and stationary..

The "lawn" is fine, but the veg section of the garden (which you have identified) needs digging - which it will get when spring finally hits these northern shores!

As for Dr Moreau, have you not realised that beauty is in the eye of the beholder?:smile:
