Yay !!! seen them before, but didnt expect to see them on the edge of urban sprawl at the edge of Peterborough.
Driving to work this morning, just skirting Stanground along the new bypass...there they are, in some shallow pools that have been scaped at the edge of the road...

The link is for one in another land, but they're basically the same.
Seen them quite a lot when i worked in Spain, seen them before in England, but its always a nice surprise to see them at all.

Lovely birds! I saw one in Deptford Creek a few years ago and another further upstream on the River Pool earlier this year. It's always special when you see such birds in the city, isn't it?

I spent a lot of time in Portuguggle and Spain when I was younger... loved seeing these, very beautiful, and elegant in flight. Haven't seen any Stupid Bustards for a while though.

we see them quite often at summer leys just down from wellingborough , and some times if lucky close enough to observe in detail by the eye rather than through the telescope

20 years ago you'd have had folks from all over the place coming to spot a little egret but they've done really well recently with their range increasing northwards year on year. We get a few hereabouts and I had thought last winter would hammer them but they seem to be OK. I guess they'll end up a riparian version of collard doves - I think no collared doves had been seen in the UK at all before about 1950 and now they seem to be everywhere.
On a dove related tangent- haven't heard any turtle doves at all this year. Bit sad about that as they're really suffering and probably won't be about for much longer. Normally hear at least a couple of pairs bit none at all so far this 'summer'.

Blowed if I am going to let two spoilsports beat me to the most obvious one!

Her is my version!

Wasn't Frank Sinatra a Devotee of these birds as a culinary delight, but unable to source them ?

Egrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention

Remember great big Betty Mavery? She’s got her own aviary!

She’s got the biggest parakeets I’ve ever seen.
