NCN7 goes to Sunderland Charlie and it is doable on a Brompton. The route into Newcastle, however, is NCN14 and is on disused railway trackbeds I think. They'll be fine in fine weather but can be a messy affair when it's wet if the Waskerley Way (NCN7) is anything to go by. A bit more, not a lot more, is here
Once you get down the hill onto the riverside I think it's all tarmac - you could cross the river and head along the north bank or stick to the south side and cross from Gateshead into Newcastle.
The route downhill from Consett is the Derwent Valley route - I don't know what the surfaces are but I think you'll probably find more info by Googling "Derwent Valley Way" or similar.
