No but I would love to! The in laws are off there with their camper van next summer, apparently revisiting the place where my FiL was struck my lightning when he was younger. Whatever floats your boat I suppose....

I am sure that was a discussion about this a couple of years back, but I can remember who, it is worth doing a search for the thread, I seem to remember there was useful information about tunnels and ferries.

The scenery on the Lofoten isles is absolutely stunning and the cycling is lovely, well worth doing. We cycled it back in 2006 and you will find our travelogue with photos here. You will also find some other travelogues of the Lofoten isles from our friends Brian & Karen of Wheelbuddies and Jerry Webb of Blissonwheels.

There is also some general information on cycling Norway here. As mentioned in the previous post one thing to watch out for are the tunnels some are banned to cyclist, you will find our tunnel map here. There are several tunnels on the Lofoten isles some of which have been recently opened, none of which are banned but there are a few that need some caution but most can be avoided by alternative routes.

Definitely go for it, the Lofoten isles is high up in our top ten of best cycling routes!

Many thanks - SWIBO spent the morning reading your travelogue cover to cover. Not been put off.

Questions:
Midges; You make no mention. Are they an issue in June do you know?
Money; Just how expensive is Norway ?

hi Brains, glad you enjoyed the read.

We had no problems with midges on Lofoten in July and August so I doubt there will be a problem in June.

If you like drinking beer (high taxation on alcohol) , staying in hotels and eating out especially in Oslo then Norway is expensive. Certain items in Norwegian supermarkets are a bit more expensive than in the UK but some things like fish are much cheaper, generally Norway isn't as expensive as it used to be compared to the UK. Long gone are the days when the Norwegians used to flock in their droves across on the Bergen to Newcastle ferry to buy our cheap goods and clothes in the Gateshead MetroCentre, hence the reason that that ferry has now ceased. Campsites prices compare quite well to ours and if anything slightly cheaper, an average price for 2 people and a small tent is @150 NOK which is just over £15.

Enjoy yourselves you will love it and we hope the weather is as good as we had back in 2006!

Mrs Brains and I were thinking of heading off to the far North this summer and cycling on the Lofoten Islands.

Anyone been there or cycled there ?

I'm going in June, Mr Brains. Trondheim to Tromso following the coastal cycle route to Bodo, ferry from Bodo to the Lofoten Islands and back over to the mainland using the ferry at the northern most point. Flights are booked using Norwegian.com.

I think the Lofoten are definitly one of the greater places in Norway. The nature is stunning. A lot of people come for cycling, but if you ask me its not the best. The roads are narrow and the traffic can be dangerous. There are a lot of tunnels to avoid: there are cycling paths around but you have to know how to find them. However as I said a lot of people still go because of the lovely nature and hikes you can do there. This website is very useful for finding your hikes: http://hiking-lofoten.net. (just a tip because as it goes for some of the cycling paths: the hiking trails can be difficult to find)
