London - Cape Town

Hi, in 2012/13 im planning on riding from London to Cape Town. I already have basic outline of the route that i want to take. To make it more manageable ive split it into 3 sections; London to Rome, Alexandria to Aswan, and Johannesburg to Cape Town. I hope to a plane between Rome and Alexandria, and Alexandria and Johannesburg ( mostly as i don't know anything about the rest of africa eg time or difficulty). Im looking for any general advice to do with equipment eg lists, routes or anything really. At the moment doing it unsupported and solo. I will be 18/19 at the time but it will be my 3rd or 4th touring expedition. (have done a week in france, got a week in spain in the summer and amybe another).

Not really "riding from London to Cape Town" though is it? Plane from Alexandria to Jo'burg kind of misses out 90% of Africa.
However, I applaud your decision to aim to do the trip and expect you will have a great adventure. Others will be along with more specific advice soon. Meantime have a look at http://takeonafrica.com/ for some inspiration.

London to Cape Town??!!!

Ive ridden in UK from Sheffield to Hull, and I also rode a bit in South Korea, does this count as a Trans Siberian expedition.

Ok so maybe not, but if anyone can suggest a suitable route from egypt to south africa then i will happily icorperate it.

Have a look at Tour d'Afrique website. They have an established route down through Africa.

As do dozens of independent cyclists who pass that way each year.
