Great stuff from the driver. I remember that it wasn't that long ago when I used to go to Copenhagen and marvel at drivers doing the same thing for cyclists there. I explained to my colleagues that if us cyclists assumed this in London we would be over the bonnet or having a fight with drivers. And yet now this waiting is common place.

I do have some concerns though. I don't think every driver has caught onto the need to do this, and so I don't trust anyone with a left turn indicator on. This means I sometimes get to a point where I have slowed and stopped and so have they, and we are both patiently waiting for each other. Still, better than both assuming we will both wait and neither doing so. Maybe some kind of signal from the waiter to the waitee (if you see what a mean) needs to be introduced!

See that, I think is the way forward, mutual respect and proper road awareness.

I've been doing it myself for a long time now, in acknowledging a good action, even if it was in holding back safely for a few seconds before safely overtaking me, then it gets a thanks wave/thumbs up from me. And quite often and it is increasing, I will see a thank you wave back from said driver.

It costs nothing to be polite, as my mum would teach me when I was younger, there has just been a continual loss of humility and frustration and common courtesy and a simple thanks can change everything.

I think its good to post drivers doing good sometimes too, most drivers I meet on the roads treat me with respect. In fact sometimes too much, frequently I can see someone ahead who wants to turn right across my path and they wait for what seems an age for me to pass. I guess they cant judge my speed and play it safe. I always give them a wave of thanks, even if I do have right of way, hopefully it helps to know I appreciated it. ^_^

Agreed and, IMO, it gives the added bonus of the feel good factor and when things aren't so nice I don't get as annoyed. Some of my early riding efforts saw me getting home feeling like a coiled spring.

Makes a change from drivers doing that, nearly hitting people and claiming they had right of way.

Agree-you've just got to make the gesture very clear. Things can get misinterpreted.

Many a right turn signal turns into a thumbs up when the following car backs off.

I have a habit of doing this a lot too.

I gave a jolly thumbs up to a driver who sped up and overtook me when I was holding my arm out for a right turn. He didn't like this very much - so I suppose it is all context. ^_^

tbh I'd rather they did than than speeding up and trying to drive right through me after I've finished signalling and started manoeuvring.

Spot on. Hopefully he driver will tell other and this behaviour will spread.
I thank drivers regularly when they sit back to let me out to turn or move fully over to the outer lane until they get past me on a dual.
Similarly they get the one finger salute or disdainful shake of the head when they don't.

I was about to say that the driver did nothing wrong at all until I saw the thumbs up.

Heartwarming stuff, in a way. It's always the little things...*sniff*
