As if by magic, here's the route I took in June.

I don't think you need panniers but my advice would be to stop everywhere that you can see food available or at least don't think "Oh it'll be ok there'll be another place soon". I ran out of food and water at least twice. Really, really eat a lot between Burton and Ashbourne, you will need it!

I left London at midnight cos the A5 is ok during the night. I'm not sure it's bad during the day but at night it's relatively pleasant if a bit boring. I got to my destination which was 230 miles at about 5pm but as I've mentioned I ran out of food and water which really slowed me down.

If you need any other advice feel free to PM me.

Am I missing a trick or can't I edit your route?

using martins route i have come up with this route which avoids most the hills around buxton as after 150miles i dont fancy doing 5000ft of climbing

i have got it down to 192 miles and 8500ft of climbing i havent gone over the route intensly so if anybody spots roads that shouldnt/cant be cycled please let me know thank you

Although I really suffered in the Peaks through not eating enough, I do think you're missing the star turn of the trip by going around them. It's your ride though and if the dates fit, I'll be along.

I'll be riding my route in early June sometime followed by a return 3 or so days later as prep for LEL.

In the end 6 of us did the ride with Charlie. We left London velodrome at 3.30 am and arrived back at the Manchester velodrome just before 10pm. A total of just under 14 hours in the saddle. Pretty good route although we got a little lost in London and just ended up on the North circular!

Well done. That's pretty good going. I can't access the strava route from here, did you go through the Peaks or round them?

My car would get out of breath doing that journey. The longest ride I've ever done so far is about 15 miles!!
