London's version of those busy Tokyo street crossings

This is pretty amusing - Oxford Circus has just opened a big pedestrian crossing like the ones in major Japanese (and other countries?) cities.

I hope nobody comes to any harm. There looks to be a time before people start using the system properly.... small clumps of stranded people here and there, others shouting at them to stay on the pavement.

The centre of the whole thing, where many people naturally converge and try to pass each other, reminded me of a colony of bees.

Any CC-ers used it yet?

I beat you to it over in P&L ....I think it's a good idea. Certainly since getting back from Nam I'll cross the road however I feel like ;)...It was easier to cross a 20 meter wide road in Vietnam, full of mo-peds and everything else, than it is to cross a standard two lane road in the UK.

More people would walk it more if pavements weren't so stupidly designed. If I want to walk to Sainsburys from my house I have to go down a tiny strip of pavement which is barely wide enough for me, walk around barriers put up everwhere....
