Longer cleat bolts?

Grrr. Having finally got pedals and shoes I was really excited to go clipless today, but I can't get the ****ing cleats onto the shoes. I've tried swearing at them and throwing them across the room, but surprisingly it didn't help. After a bit of googling I've discovered that some shoes need longer cleat bolts (including Diadora, which is what I've got).

Does anyone have any experience of this? It seems the standard size is 8mm, but you can get them in 13.5mm and 16mm - if they ended up too long would that be a problem?

Never mind, problem solved!

In case anyone else has the same problem and finds this thread: any bolts/screws labelled "M5x12mm" should do the trick, as long as they have a head that's thin enough that it doesn't protrude out of the cleat.
