Left the house at 19:30 for a night shift, but forgot my (House\work desk\bike lock) keys. I didnt realise until I had arrived.

Luckily it was only 3miles each way. So a usual 6 mile round trip clocked up about 14miles.

I had to cycle back home in the snow before Christmas to un-freeze the missus car - it was my fault as I'd jet washed it the weekend before (in between the freezes - was raining at the time).... 8 miles to work, 8 miles home, 8 miles back.....

Took half a day actually so no-one could moan - TBH most wouldn't have noticed I wasn't there. As it was so cold, I needed to dry my kit off again before heading back to work though.......

I did get Brownie points for cycling home and back, and it was 'plus' points with some of my colleagues opinions of me...heh...heh..

Many years ago as a youngster, I'd cycled 6 miles to work in work stuff (road shoes on) got to work, realised 'normal' shoes were at home, cycled back, got them, and was still at work on time ..... although sweaty by now...........

I have forgotten a lock after a member of the family knocked the bag over and it all spilled out under a table. I now keep a spare, cheap D Lock at work just in case.

The worst one was getting home after a 25 mile commute to find I'd left my house keys back in the office. I couldn't believe it and seriously considered just smashing a window and breaking in. But I didn't want to leave the house in that state for the next day while I was back at work. So I dumped my bag of work clothes on the front step and headed back, adding another 50miles to a busy day. I drove into work the next day!

Now I always have a spare key hidden somewhere in the garden just in case.

Ugh, that must have been horrible, an enforced 50 mile ride at the end of an already long day.

The only thing I can think of worse than that is for the keys to fall out of your pocket en-route.

This happened about 20 years ago (before i had a mobile phone) i used to commute from Isleworth to Gatwick, one saturday i cycled to work to do a bit of overtime,I decided i could leave my rucksack at work and cycle home without a heavy bag on my back, and i would drive in on Monday so i could collect it then.about 15 miles into my ride home it dawned on me that id left my house/car keys in my bag !!!!! i lived alone so i had no choice but to return to collect the keys. I stopped at a phone box and used all the money i had trying to call anyone i knew to give me a lift as i was shattered.no joy there so it meant a 15 mile return ride to gatwick (that meant twice up Reigate hill for those that know the area)so that was an extra 30 miles on my 50 mile round trip commute.

Some 20-odd years ago: In those days it was just over 16 miles to work. Monday morning I got in, only to be reminded that I was due at a different office that week! The other office was one where I didn't have a spare change of clothes; so it was back home for a set that'd pack in a bar-bag, followed by a 25mile trip to the other office. I got there midmorning, just as the meeting was starting. Then it was 25 miles home (and a 50 mile round trip daily for the rest of the week).

Oh for those days, when I was young enough that it didn't even hurt!

Not really commuting, but whilst camping I cycled into town to do a bit of shopping. Town was 5 miles away at the bottom of a valley, so when I arrive in town I suddenly realise that I had left my wallet in the pocket of my other trousers that were in my tent. So I had to ride all the way up to the campsite to get my wallet and then ride back into town to do my shopping.

I'm lucky coz i have a locker at work where i store a few days worth of clothes and keep a pair of shoes, and i can't lock the house without bring my keys out with me, with my locker/bike lock key on the keyring, so i don't forget my keys going to work. When i leave work the last thing i do is lock my locker and unlock my bike so i know i have my house keys with me.

i did once miscalculate and ran out of knickers! LOL

I have about a 33.33% failure rate to remember office keys if I have to drive into work.... only driven in 6 times in 3 years, twice forgotten keys from either the pannier or rucksack.
