Liverpool isn't very big, like Manchester - both very compact. Jump on the ferry if you fancy a change over in the Wirral. Not far from N. Wales.....

Wait for the locals to fill you in......

From a cycling point of view, the central areas are not good. Multiple traffic lanes and multiple pillocks to match. However, the city does have its attractions if you like museums, art galleries and maritime history. As a rural dweller, I like Liverpool. I have found the locals friendly and helpful, and if you like real ale, Thomas Rigbys on Dale Street is unbeatable.

Used to cycle in and out of Liverpool when I was at Uni there. 7 miles each way. It's not as complex as some city centres but it is busy. Very doable I'd say. Don't live on the Wirral if you go to Uni there, too far away from everything, mind you the tunnel bus is a surreal experience late at night, if it still runs.

Riding wise: you've got flat out to the North and to the NW (west lancs - hilly), Cheshire (by Runcorn) is testingly up & down...or like Foss says NW Wales is a gem...I totally luv it there....

BTW FOSS' - Manchesters massive compared to Livepool !
