Looking to find the cheapest way to cycle in Spain this summer

Around about mid Aug to mid Sep this summer I would like to do some cycling in Spain, my main problems in terms of planning are money, the actual route i'm not too fussed about.

Flying is relatively cheap only if booked in advance, and for various reasons this is not possible.

I have been playing with the idea of getting the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao as this would not need to be booked in advance right? Also, I can not find prices for taking a bicycle on this route anywhere online?

Then cycling down to Alicante to see a friend for a few days then making a bit of a loop through southern Spain back up to Santander to catch a ferry back to Portsmouth (again I can not find prices for this route?)

I will be camping in the wild and eating cheaply. (just to add, I know there is an 0871 number to phone one of the ferry companies but from a mobile the prices are way to high!)

If anyone has some information or tips or ideas or has done a similar route and knows apprx. prices all this would be greatly appreciated!

We're going Portsmouth to Santander, you get get a quote and book on line using the Brittany ferries site (it's not cheap mind).
