Lost files recover programs

Can anyone suggest a good program for recovering lost files.........documents/ photos etc.

Have tried a couple of freeware programs without much success so I don't mind paying for a decent one.

Tried Recuva by the folks that bring you ccleaner ?
Note if this is an active drive and you've continued to use it since then it's quite possible that any deleted files will have been at least partially overwritten so therefore permanently lost.
What do you mean by lost ?
