Lowering gear ratio on an old town bike

I had a nice steel Bianchi from the eighties and I think that had a English thread BB. Might be worthwhile if going out there to take cups for both

So, after a little more research it might be possible to determine the thread by getting a measurement of the BB shell, 68mm being English, 70mm being Italian.

Apperently the bike has been "used too much" by my friend's younger siblings, so I'm starting to feel more inclined towards living with leg ache than lavishing money on it.
