Born 19 September 1929 in Horgen, Switzerland, Luigi Taveri was to become not only one of the most decorated riders in the history of the FIM Circuit Racing World Championship but also one of the most versatile, as the only man on record to have scored points in six Grand Prix classes: 50cc, 125cc, 250cc, 350cc, 500cc and Sidecars.
One of my childhood heroes.
I had the great honour af riding alongside him, on the parade laps, at the last 'Bill Ivy Silver Helmet' memorial meeting at Brands Hatch in 1999.
I was on an ex Bill Ivy 250cc Cotton Telstar and Luigi was on a works Honda 250/4.
The sound of the Honda accelerating away when I was sitting two feet off its exhaust will haunt me forever!
Thank you Luigi.
