Has anyone cycled the Maine coastline?

I am thinking of riding the Maine Coastline (North to South) in Oct or Nov this year

Has anyone any experience of this area?

any help or comments appreciated

Having lived in Connecticut for a while in the mid 1990's my memory of November in Maine is of snow, wind and rain.
Also if memory serves, the prevailing wind is South west to North East.
Still, sounds like a trip you will never forget ........

Hi Brains
I have not fully decided on that route yet - i am also considering either crossing Newfoundland or a circular trip around Cape Breton Island
but i don't know much about any of those areas. (NS looks good too - but i will be limited to around 10 days..)
Snow wind and rain might make for a long trip - especially if using a tent for at least some of the time (i would prefer to be in it as much as possible)

Pretty much anywhere in the States above the Mason-Dixon Line in November is a bit cool. Probably rideable, but bring the cool weather gear. Rain , changing to snow.

At that time of the year I would confine the idea to 'Thinking' and move onto the next thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I have cycled up that way. Couple of things you need to know:

1. At that time it can get very cold....
2. Don't think it will be like the UK -in some parts shops and accommodation will be few and far between.
3. Be prepared to see some trees. And some more trees. And some more. Oh, did I mention you will see some trees?

Actually seriously, this tour might be a bit boring. I'll be honest, I haven't cycled it, but there's a reason for that. I would recommend a more southerly tour, if only for more interest let alone the weather. Any particular reason you want to do this? And sorry, don't mean to sound too negative about it -if you have your heart set on it, go for it!!

I can recommend some tours around Boston if you are interested assuming you are flying into Logan.

Tony, I recently cycled from Boston Ma to Bar Harbor in Maine. I loved it. I had difficulty getting over a bridge in Portsmouth. The small bridge was being repaired. I went across the larger bridge, behind the crash barrier, but on the far side the barrier tapered in. I then had to carry my fully loaded bike over it, with busy busy traffic. Not easy. I got as far as Bucksport and was stopped by a tropical storm. But a great tour. If you have an iPad there is a very good interactive book in the ibook store. Called Boston to Bar Harbor by Paul Mulvey. He and his friends cycled the route the week before me. The book has links to websites and photos included. It is very good, costs about £2.99
I cycled up the coast for most of the trip, but there was long sections of main route one. Long and boring with traffic, but big hard shoulders. I would do it again and I reccomend it. Dave
