A few lessons to be learned I think, for me at least.

4 or 5 months ago I bought a second hand Yeti Arc on eBay. It's a 2009 frame.

I just took it to my LBS for a service and they've just called me to say there are two cracks on the head tube. In their view its not safe to ride. Dammit.

I'll go get it and post up some pics. Obviously I didn't see it when I was buying it.

I think the frame is covered by a 5 year warranty. I wonder if that is "original owner only".

Tough luck  . Could have been a lot worse tho'. You might have been descending at speed when it failed

I'd have a go on the 5yr warranty - you could always be "economical" with the truth about ownership

how come the LBS spotted it and not you? should be part of routine maintenance and cleaning, especially with the mud we've had recentlhy so lots of cleaning, to look over the frame and components.

frames, even aluminium ones can be repaired, just a question of whether it is cost effective.

worth contacting yeti, they may not help you out but it should be in their interest to know abouot frame failures.

I don't know - I don't have it home yet. It's not as if I haven't been cleaning it thoroughly, my wife thinks I'm obsessive. I'm no expert for sure, only been cycling a year, but you'd think a crack would jump right out.

I emailed Yeti and gave them the full story. I'm too honest to try stretching things. There's no way I could even try to sell it now. We'll see what Yeti say but I'm not holding out too much hope. Seller says he bought it mid 2008 and is looking for the receipt. I think he's being straight with me.

If nothing comes from that, where would I look in the uk to price up getting it welded? Is it even feasible?

Or, new frame and swap the components over ...

Well Yeti were sympathetic but at the end of the day the warranty doesn't transfer.

I'll ask the LBS about welder options but it's looking like a new frame.

i think i sent you mesage about repainring it - lemme know if you did nnot get it,

Hi, no PM.

The LBS are skeptical about whether it is cost effective to repair and how safe it will be when it's done. They've put me in touch with a company they've used before though, Atlantic Boulevard in Bury.

A little research though makes me believe that Aluminium welds are highly unlikely to prove safe and that it will need proper heat treatment. I have a feeling I'm looking at a new frame at £700.

The dealer in conjunction with Yeti offered a 25% discount on a new frame. Figure that's the best I can do so will confirm tomorrow.

That not bad, 25% discount. MTBs get a hammering if used properly.

It's likely appeared after purchase second hand, but it is important you wash and polish the bike regular, then you can spot faults, yeh laugh, but you will spot any damage when you give the bike a good once over. In the end it's a machine, and they get banged about, that's what they are there for, using.

Agree. Thought I was cleaning it well, but live and learn.

Wonder what to do with a cracked frame then?
