Make everyone cycle for a day

Maybe they should do this as being a driver fo nearly 20 years, but a cycling commuter for only 2 months, I've certainly changed my driving habits around cyclists recently.

I've often thought that too - but it's not really practical.

I wish we could have that rule for road transport engineers.

It would help give them some understanding of the requirements of their cycling customers, an understanding at present sadly lacking in many cases.

Funnily enough, I have recently noticed that my driving has changed a bit.
I never considered myself a "bad" driver before (not good either mind, just average), and thought I was courteous in the main.
That possibly was true, but I find myself thinking more now, being CERTAIN I am giving people enought space, rather than just thinking I have and so on.
Can only be a good thing I think.

I was thinking maybe having disqualified drivers do a compulsory three week course where they cover, say, 700 miles on city roads over the duration.

...with a brush strapped to their rear wheel to sweep the road whilst the do it!!

Any driver that gets caught overtaking a cyclist too close should spend 12 hours on a static bike on the hard shoulder of a motorway

Excellent!

I have noticed that if I am in the car, and I am coming up to a cyclist, and I give them an extra wide berth, the motorists immediately behind me do too.
In the same way, if you're on a fast road and you see people slowing to avoid a piece of wood or cardboard in the road, you do too. We are so influenced by the behaviour of others.

Rather than making everyone cycle for a day, how about nobody cycles for a day. It would demonstrate to drivers just how much congestion there would be on the roads if cyclists were in cars instead of bikes.

Nah, that would really confuse them! They'd still be stuck in traffic and have no one to blame by shouting about road tax and cycle lanes.

Hmmm...

I drive cars and cycle regularly. I have driven HGVs a little and ridden motorcycles a lot.

Frankly, I'm pants at all of the above. Each new skill just goes to prove how poorly I mastered the others.

I think they should just have mandatory tests which have to be passed before gaining a license for anything motorised.

In addition to that there should be mandatory 3rd party insurance for anything motorised and a system of Vehicle Excise Duty with higher annual charges for some vehicles than others.

I think also that cars should be subject to a thorough annual inspection once they have been registered for 3 years from new. Failure on any aspect of the inspection would render the vehicle undriveable on the Public Highway until repaired to the satisfaction of an approved tester.

I shall vote for any party that introduces the above measures.
