I know it's the mail but really had up for riding on the pavement because he forgot his lights.

Yes we should have lights and yes I do (dynamo and back ups and I am rarely out when you would need them) but I think the way he was treated and charged was probably a teeny tiny bit to do with how abusive he became when stopped .

I could be wrong, but it is best not to act like a nobber when the nice police stop you.

^^^this.
My work coleague was stopped a few nights ago, as his front light battery had died. He said sorry to the officer, who accepted his story that he simply didnt know the battery had died and went on his was via the nearest shop to buy some more.
If you are nice to police oficers they will be nice back to you.

+1.
I am a retired one of them, and can confirm that attitude can go a long way to deciding your fate when being pulled up for minor offences.

Having now managed to access the link, it is clear that the nobber cyclist wasn't arrested for cycling without lights. He was arrested for refusing to give his name and address to the nice Polce Officer who dared to stop him before he got mangled by a car.
Deserved all he got IMHO. Pity that the court bottled it. That sends out the wrong message to other would be nobbers.

It's going back and it's a Cateye.

The other morning I bumped into the only other regular cyclist at my work, and was talking about my new front light. He then said 'oh, I don't bother with lights, when it's dark I ride on the pavement'.

I disguised my shock and disapproval as I decided that in this case, cyclists' solidarity was more important in a huge office full of car drivers.
