In order to preventing it being stolen, does it work? (i.e spary paint it)

Anyone tried?

Is it possible to make a good bike looks ugly whilst you dont feel too bad about it yourself?

I wouldn't - I like my bikes looking good.....

Get some mahoosive locks instead, and don't leave it where it's vulnerable.

Ha! Easy.

Simply attach mudguards and a pannier rack then get it all dirty by riding forest bikepaths in the rain.

It'll look like shoot in a week.

Just like mine

agree with the tape thing, you can get about 10 rolls of electrical tape for 99p at the, wait for it... 99p shops.

it's not permanent and it makes the bike look rather naff, just what you want

you could even go for the "earth wire" look !!!!

You could wrap a bike in black duct tape for that 'stealth' look.

Trouble is that a good well maintained bike will always be given away by the well maintained drive train and brakes.

Always lock it up next to a more attractive (to the thief) option

would tapeing be a a big "give away" to the thiefs for a nice bike?

In this situation I always think it better to have a naff bike which looks naff with some good locks rather than wrecking a good bike. Mudguards are definitely a good idea (very useful but also unappealing to thieving chavs) as is a nice brush paint job with any paint you have available. the bike will only cost ya a few quid from fleybay or a local sale. Then keep your good bike for situations where you’re not likely to leave it in a bad location.
The only problem with this approach is I tend to end up liking my naff bike more than my good bike real ugliness and usability seems to become beautiful and convenient.

I have included a picture of last years naff bike £6ish from ebay.

mmm, possibly  i guess it could

I'd bet it would. Organised bike thieves will know all the tricks, and they'll be able to spot an expensive bike being disguised as a crap one too. You might discourage the casual thief - not the pro, IMO.

Plus, it seems a bit skewed to buy a really nice bike, then make it look like a pile of poo. BB's idea of buying a hack bike and never leaving your best bike unattended gets my vote

That's SO true. My nice bikes hardly see daylight nowadays and my naff but functional bikes get exercised every day.

My £17 Ebay tank, to which I've fitted my Brooks B66:
