I haven't actually cycled there, but here are a few thoughts as to what I would expect.
- It is tiny, and you could easily get around the island in a day. Even less for Gozo.
- Lots of traffic in the built-in areas, which is basically the whole north of the island. I think most of it will be fairly slow-moving but with some erratic behaviour.
- An off-road bike might be good for some of the extremities of the islands (I include Gozo here) as there are some unpaved routes that I'm sure you could cycle on.
- There are quite a few hills, but nothing very high.
- The rural and coastal areas (outside the big northern resort strip) are quite scenic, and the old fortified towns around the Grand Harbour (Valletta is the main one - sorry the names of the others escape me for the moment) look great too.

I reckon it would be quite fun having a bike with you there for a few days, but it will hardly be long-distance trekking.

Valletta is worth a visit very old and interesting, when we were on the island a few years back, there was a thunderstorm, the roads are not built to cope with the rain and everywhere was flooded, I did drive over there and seem to recall the roads not being the best, but no worse than some of the patched up rubbish we now have to endure over here, like robjh above I too think its worth exploring the island by bike, just don't get in the way of the bird shooters,

Would never ever cycle in Malta have been there 5 times over the years. So many cars now drivers don't seem to care about cyclists what with the roads not being great my advice is to avoid.

Thanks for the replies...Off there in early March to see their version of the Venice carneval I usually just hire locally or take my folder and use it for sightseeing..or short tours of 30- 40 miles.or so ....so thinking doing the same..on Malta,Thanks

I agree with Bikepacker.

Usually I will cycle anywhere but I would give Malta a miss. Remember that this Island was bombed to death in WWII and the roads show this. Then there is the traffic. Its a tiny Island and is packed with vehicles.

A far better option are the colourful Maltese/English buses. Very cheap to ride all day.
