How does it all work??

We’re on the Island, between Monday 17th & Friday 21st, & barring the visitors vehicles, it all seems odd

Some seem to have hyphens included, is that treated as a character, to allow a greater number of registrations available?

It seems odd, seeing a (present model) of, eg; a Volvo, on a ‘P’ suffix

Republic of Ireland registrations have them as well. I suspect it's to stop people having illegally spaced characters on their licence plates.
