I finally rode a Schwalbe Marathon Plus to death today.
I've been commuting on it ( on and off) for about four years. It must easily have 7,000 plus very hard going miles in it. Ran over a really rough patch of roadworks just outside Leatherhead ( ironically they are building a cycle path ) it felt a bit bumpy then ' bang'.

Only the second time that tyre has lost air in its life.

RIP

I had a pair of M+ fitted in May 2009.
The rear was replaced late last year & the front is still going strong.

Only one puncture in all that time.
I'm not a high mileage merchant;apart from an e2e & a few audaxes each year; but IME they do what it says on the tin.
They are a bit of a barsteward to get on the rim though:cursing:

So I'm guessing you'd recommend them then eh? ;)

What size did you buy? I'm going to get a set if these put on my Marin when I pick it up, was thinking of dropping from the standard 36 to 28?

I would but..... I have pinged a couple of spokes on my fixed recently and a guy in the bike shop suggested M+ were so stiff they can cause wheel deformation and spokes breakages.

I've always had good wheels and never had a problem with the M+ before on any geared bike. The wheels on the fixed are, admittedly, cheap ( as chips). Lesson learned there.

Nah they're not, you don't even need levers ^_^

4400 miles on my M pluses in a year. Front still looks new and the rear only looks slightly worn. I reckon I could double the mileage on the rears before I consider replacement. 700 x 35 on the commuter

looks like next time i need a new set of tires (probably end of the year as i hope to do 2,000 odd miles this year and current tyres were on it when i bought the bike) it will be marathon plus

how do they measure up against gator skins? aren't the gator skins the really heavy ones? or is that the marathon +?
Cheers Ed

Don't talk to me about that b**** cycle path on the A24 from Leatherhead to Ashtead - half a million quid or something to narrow the road by six inches so they have a wide enough pavement to paint magic white symbols on. Except for the narrow bits obviously where considerations of minimum
Width can go hang. And the trees in the middle of pavement. And the fact that the cycle path gives way at every b**** side road, whose name is legion, and they are not even making a token attempt to provide a safe crossing of the bypass - they're depositing the cyclists 20 yards from the roundabout to cross the dual carriageway just where the cars are nicely picking up speed. Grrrrr.

But the next time you get a puncture in Leathrrhead, drop in for a cup of tea.
