Marathon Plus + Slime = Overkill?

Hi,

I got my new commuter from JEJames a couple of weeks back and decided to purchase a couple of slime tubes to counter the rather thin slicks that came with it - unfortunately they were out of stock but promised to send then later (still waiting). In that time I purchased some M+s which I duely fitted on Thurs/Fri.

My question is, once the tubes arrive, should I bother installing them (and repeat the nightmare of refitting the tyres (actually the first one went on rather easily)). Does anyone else here run on this combo? It won't do any harm but that back wheel was a killer!

Never used slime, but many say that it's more hassle than it's worth with the leaks. The M+ is by far the most anti-puncture tyre so you don't really need slime.

I run a M+ on the rear tyre and a regular Marathon on the front. It's the best compromise between safety & performance. The rear tyre is the most puncture prone.

Of course nothing beats riding carefully so avoid glass/debris strewn streets. I ride a strong secondary position - that's where the left tyres of cars run so the road is clear.

I wouldnt worry about using them. Just keep the tubes as spares.

Tried slime tyres and all i got was the slime filling the valves meaning i had to drain some out every time i wanted to pump the tyre upb y letting air out to clear the gunk out of the valve.

With M+ i would think its over kill

If you have a road bike, then I've heard the pressure in the tube forced the slime straight out anyway. Also, M+ are tough to get on- would be worse with slime tubes. Risk of very messy pinch punctures there.

Bromptonaut and Shippers raise two important points - one of my other threads relates to the difficulties I've had pumping up my new tyres to 90PSI using my current track pump - anything over 50 and the head can't maintain the seal between it and the valve resulting in air being pushed back out as I head towards 90.... add slime into the equation and I think disaster would be immenent. Still... a recent puncture I had put the wind up me - a one inch screw which went through my Big Apple 26x2.0 and through both sides of my tube. That was on my old MTB commuter - thankfully it took minutes to swap out the tube (it'll take more than minutes to remove these new M+s)

I had them on the Cannondale Hybrid, no punctures in the six months i ran with them like that, original equipment conti on the front and a Bontrager Hardcase on the rear, the tubes are heavy but they are a lot thicker than a normal one, depends how keen you are to avoid punctures, I wasnt so bothered about weight on the hybrid but I am not keen on fitting them on the road bike, have had three punctures in 400 miles since i got it so have swapped the rear for a Vittoria Rubino Pro that gets a good write up puncture wise, and otherwise, seems ok after one commute.
