I managed to twist the head of one of my aluminium mech hanger screws

Tried to buy them but nowhere stocks them no LBS, not big stores like Evans and the only place on the internet that said they can get them cant.

So I went to my local hardware/ironmongers and got the correct size screws but they are stainless steel instead of the softer aluminium.

My question is does it really matter? I know the hanger is designed as a failsafe to protect the frame in the event of an accident and the hanger is also being held in place by the QR skewer so surely the wee screws are just to keep it in place and the material doesnt matter?

Typically the hanger snaps/bends rather than the fixing screws. I would be happier with the stainless screws in there personally, just put a little anti-sieze or grease on the thread and don't go mad with the strong-arm tactics when tightening. I suspect the ali screws are just a weight weeny thing and not essential to the function of the parts?

If it's an Alu frame I wouldn't be putting SS screws any where near it. If it gets a bash the screws could rip out of the frame leaving it fubar'd, where as alu screws will snap and allow the screws to be potentially drilled out and replaced.

My mech hanger has a steel screw - the hanger will snap first. That's what it's designed to do.
You're not going to rip the hanger off - like you say, the QR holds the top part on.

Thanks green1, yes its an Alu frame but the QR skewer holds the hanger firmly in place so was thinking the hanger would go first.
