A bell works well. 1m 40s is my favourite bit:

Isnt it amazing how the Japanese just accept bikes on the pavement and move over automatically.
I'd like to see someone do that it the UK and see what happens.

I slow to walking pace and wait for them to notice me. I feel ringing a bell or shouting excuse me would be a tad rude to someone who after all has priority over me on a shared path. I then thank them for moving out of the way. I also shout "f*****g w*****r" at the stupid, head down nobber who attempts to get to the gap before me.

It is different there, but I find a bell works well here on shared paths and canal tow-paths and the like.
