I was knocked off my bike last week by a driver who turned right across my path (and into me) at a four way junction. At the scene he have me his mobile phone number (but none of the otehr details such as name, address, insurer...) and offered to pay, now he knows how much it will cost to put bike right (about £400) he has changed his tune: counteroffering £50 and saying it was my fault as I should not have gone through a red light. I didn't go through a red light, though, and even if I had done there would have been no way he could have seen my light from his position in the middle of the junction.

I got phone numbers at the scene of a couple of witnesses, I also have a picture of his car post-collision showing the number plate, and I reported it to the police the same day. The CTC legal advice service are supposed to be phoning me back today. I'm going to go back to the scene today and look for CCTV, but not sure how I can find out who owns which camera or how to get the footage/stop them deleting the footage until the police get around to asking for it. Is there anything else I should be doing? I don't know if I should contact the witnesses or leave that for the police/Slater & Gordon to do

I have a wrenched and very swollen knee (I'm limping a bit) and various cuts and abrasions which I got checked out by a nurse the next day, plus some kind of rib pain (probably more likely a bruise than a break, sleeping is uncomfortable but laughing is still just about manageable) which subsequently came to light. And my bike has bent frame, handlebars, brakes. Honestly, I was just going to take the money for the bike and chalk the rest up to bad luck, but if I have to do the full insurance palaver I might as well claim for the whole lot.

What should I do next? I've not heard back from the police since I took the form into the station, but that was last Friday and they said at the time to give it seven days. I'm mostly worried about what to do or not to do with the witnesses - should I call them, or would that look as though I was trying to influence them, or what?

If the driver has not reported it to the police then they are potentially in a lot of trouble, a big fine and points.
The driver could also be in trouble for not giving you his details which is a legal requirement when someone is injured.
Unfortunately there is a widely held misconception that bikes on cost £50:wacko:

I hope you are ok, it is a shock to the system after something like that. Get yourself to the doctors and make sure its on your medical record, also start shaking and rocking in a ball when you see a car, that always helps.

You can request copies of CCTV under the data protection act rather than wait around for the police:

Sounds like you did the best you could. You were able to take a photo of his car and position and also you got the names of a couple of witnesses. Having worked in insurance claims now for nearly 27 years I have always advised friends that it is essential to get the names of witnesses to the accident. A lot of weight is put on their comments. But don't be surprised if he magics a couple of witnesses out of thin air to say he was the innocent party.

Nothing to add other than good luck and the driver sounds like a berk.
