I started out cleaning with spray degreasers till everything shined then oiling and wondering why it was filthy within a few days and crappy. Evenetually got links so stiff the chain would shift on the big ring of its own accord to match the cassette.

Then I moved to the mickle method of wipe till cleanish, oil, wipe off oil. This worked wonders for a few days then it got stiff, fine still crappy so I did it again. Happened a few times and I seem to need to clean the chain every few days to keep it smoooth.

Am I doing it wrong or is the chain just a bit fc-uk'd from previous abuse?

What lube do you use (on your bike! )

It could be the type of oil you are using.

If your chain needs replacing, I'd do it now; otherwise you risk having to change your chain, cassette and possibly chainset.
