Mirrors, anyone use them?

i have one and find it invaluable small bar end one on a MTB the best thing though is on dark commutes i have found that drivers give me more room than normal and I think its got something to do with there headlights reflecting off the mirror it also makes the bike appear wider than it is. I also look around a lot and always look before making lane changes.

I rely on my hearing and look back a lot. one of these days I'll run into the back of a milk lorry

I don't know why folks don't have mirrors. people who try to look back to see what's there, are at danger...wobbles ect.

Because they're not necessary on a normal bike. If you can't look back without wobbling, then it's showing a severe weakness in your bike handling skills that needs to be sorted asap. Practice and drills in a park is recommended.

I did looking back tonight in the frigging snow and what did I see?

A frigging car heading right at me.

I really don't know what the F&** that was all about....seems a bit strange the snow seems to confuse the motons even though I had 4 flashing lights on my rucksack thingy.

Target fixation? You know those highway maintenance vehicles that have large light arrows on the back? They come with extremely massive crash bumpers, obv. there are some seriously dumb drivers out there who get hypnotized.

Yes it was strange I was watching him while all that bloody snow was coming down and he pulled out eventually although I wasn't nervous,it was totally nuts out there tonight.

Im off on my commute in 8 hours I hope it isn't too slippery.

I have a small mirror off the bottom of my right hand drop on my winter bike. Agree with several other people that it shouldn't replace proper efforts to be aware of what's going on around you - especially in urban traffic - but on thedual carriageway section of commute it's blooody useful to be able to get a feel for an untidy situation developing behind....

Another vote for the little bar end jobbies here. As said, it's no substitute for looking behind, not least to get that bit of eye contact that marks you out as another human rather than as a mobile chicane.

But it's very useful for glancing in frequently to keep you up to date with what's coming up behind.
