His job is to race races not as a show pony IMHO.
FWIW, I don't blame him for a second for taking the wonga. It's the organisers who have diverted their event for no real gain.

Both fair points.

Who knows, maybe he's been secretly training like a lunatic and is about to knock in a worldie. That would be some impressive psyching out!

Is the London Marathon a shamelessly profit orientated event which people pay to run in, which happens to provide individuals with the opportunity [like CarlP's partner- well done her] to raise money for their own charities if they so choose, or, is it a charity fun run which isn't set up or organised to pay shareholders and/or stakeholders and provides as much vital money, for all sorts of research and charity support, as it can.

My reaction to Mo running for appearance money will be different depending on the answer.

Sounds like the organisers pocket it then... possibly Brendan Foster, Steve Cram and the backers and sponsors... blood's starting to get heated....

Wonder if the 'bucketeers', who collect cash from the crowds lining the streets, specifically give what they raise to charities or to the generaltakings?

They also make charities pay extortionate prices for places, which they then have to attach high minimum sponsorship sometimes of around £1500 iirc. Because places are so hard to get and so limited outside of elite and charity places, people will often go for the charity places. Then you've got to pester people for lots of sponsorship, which youll get taken to court for if you don't come up with, so it's not uncommon for people to have to later do another sponsored event to raise enough to pay off their London Marathon place, of which a big chunk goes to the organizers. There are plenty of cheaper marathons though, so no ones forced into anything

Nothing against Mo, if someone offered me 500000 to run half a marathon I'd bite their hand off.

Why? I can only guess it is so that the TV companies and other advertisers will pay to organisers .... but the my view is the event is to raise money for charidee not to then hand it back to perfeshional athletes.

Aye. In my opinion, Mo can pretty much do whatever the hell he wants, (within the confines of legality mind - why do I feel the need to qualify that ?).
The guy is a double Olympic Champion runner, a startling achievement. Sure he has sponsorship now but ffs, the training he does, the role model he is and the lack of cash in athletics - its bonkers to begrudge him trousering a month's premiership footballer wages.

Don't worry everyone! It's all right! It doesn't matter that Mo isn't running the whole thing, there are 30,000 others doing it including my wife.
