That was one depressing depression they went through. My Father's generation went through it, and they seemed to have had it about as bad. When everything seemed at its' worst, a big dust storm hit.

I 'had a thing' about Mary Ellen (or 'Hairy Melon' as we called her). The actress eventually appeared in Playboy in an effort to shed her 'goody goody' image.

You remind me of one of the many amusing tales in my superb volume Nirvana Bleach, available now in no good bookstores:

John Steinbeck's widow once gave a reading of some of his works to a hall full of students in China. After she'd finished, she was approached by one of the audience, who told her that her husband's work was held in very high regard thereabouts, "particularly his novel 'Angry Raisins.'"

Angry Raisins....brilliant.
I have Nirvana Bleach on my kindle app, but I have to admit I haven't read it yet. But I will do.
The book it's based on - Spencer's Mountain - is a very good read. I've never seen the film with Henry Fonda though.
That film is interesting, but it looks like it was filmed in the Rockies, not the Appalachians. Earl Hamner had a hand in the Tv show, but not the movie, IIRC.

I had to compress for space. Actually, I could go on and on about the Depression, but most of it was, according to sources, quite mundane.
