For summer I had Alpinestars shorty boots. They were so comfy both riding and walking in. Fairly waterproof if treated with dubbin, but I had other boots for downpours.
Ditto. I recently retired my old pair after near on 20 years of service (the sole was shot) I couldn't justify the replacement cost new as I don't do the kind of mileage I used to so I found a clean, low mileage 2nd hand pair. They're just so comfortable (for a bike boot) it's unreal. They're not the Road Star, these are simply called Road GTX. I can't tell the difference in honesty so maybe they're for a different market, dunno. I've read good things of Altberg but I've not worn them.
My other pair of boots are Oxtar. They're OK, more rigid protection but not so comfortable to walk in.
I've read good things of, I think, J&S's own brand touring boots, name evades me. For a budget boot they're worth a look.

I'm afraid I was too tight to pull the trigger on some proper ones, so bought some £10 boots from Primark that sort of look like bike boots. It's more because I'm long legged, so my trousers usually flap in the breeze and leave my trainers exposed.
Yes, I do know and yes, I am going to get proper bike boots.

I am currently on a tour to southern Scotland (from southern England). I have some Alpinestar goretex boots which were the most comfortable I could find when I tried ALL the boots before buying. Several of the group I am riding with sing the praises of Altberg (and were doing so not 15 minutes ago).
Sadly my much-loved Hein Gericke gloves have worn through one of the fingertips whilst away - I’ve had these around 20 years and have tried to find something to replace them and failed. They have kangaroo skin palms, knuckle and finger armour and are so comfortable. I guess I’ll have to up my search now they are worn out.
Yesterday we parked at Kielder Water for a break (the tour also includes Scotland-adjacent counties of England) and my bike’s twin came in with a totally unrelated group (mine’s the front one).

There used to be good ice cream vendor at the main carpark at Kielder - he would sell you 500 gm bars of ice cream if you were feeling greedy

Just back from my 4-day tour. 1,329 miles from South Oxfordshire to near Selkirk, via Ayr, with two days of riding in the Scottish/English border counties including bits of the Lake District.
Getting up there and back I did the fast way via motorways which was dull but efficient. The hideout days were much more fun, with around 10 other riders in a group who are mostly connected in an intercom network, meaning plenty of banter but also useful comments from riders up the road, like when it is clear to overtake, when something is coming, when there’s gravel on the road and so on. Also where to turn and which direction to go if we get separated.
We all stayed in a huge house and shared self-catering duties and a great deal of mirth. It’s one of a few annual meets for a group who have known each other for many years, but this is the first time I have made it up there. The worst mishap of the whole weekend was down to me - I knocked my helmet off my bike and it landed on the visor, cracking it at both sides near the hinge area. A dab of epoxy and some clear tape held it together long enough to survive the weekend.
