Can anyone recommend a decent trail bike, hard tail for sub 1k. A 29er would be best.

Been looking at the Trek X caliber & the spesh rock hopper.

On one Lurcher X5 or a Carbon 456 Evo Deore if you can live with 26 inch wheels.

Here we go again

Why would a 29r be best? Are you freakishly tall?

I only ask because I am 6'1" and do just fine on a 26" wheel MTB. With a £1k budget for a hardtail the world is your oyster but I have been very attracted to the Cube offerings at the sub £1k level both road and MTB. they seem to offer a very, very good spec for the £££

Or of course any of the 456 evo offerings. You did mean trail hardtail didn't you?
See also Ragley builds, Marley for alloy, Piglet for steel.

I agree, stick with a 26" you get much more for your money. Plus 29ers under a grand weigh a ton, especially the trek x- calibre ( nice looking bike thou).

I'm in the same boat. Got a Halfords C2W voucher arriving in a few weeks.

Liked the look of the X-Caliber, but was told by an LBS that Trek have completely sold out it in my size, literally none in Europe. I'm 6'4" so I think I can justify a 29er.

Currently leaning towards to a Boardman 29er, as its well specced and easy to buy directly from Halfords. I've also considered a Whyte 629 as another LBS accepts Halfords vouchers.

Get a 29r you will not regret it. They roll over everything and you don't need to be an expert at picking lines.
You can be seriously fast on a 29r no matter what your size.. I'm 5,7 standing on tippy toes.

I got the epic as Im old and thought it would help my knees with its rear sus.

If I wasn't old I would be looking at this (£100 more than you budget)

http://www.specializedconceptstore.co.uk/crave-comp/27499/14crave

In a moment someone will pop up talking about specialized being expensive with lower spec and to a point they may be right... BUT spesh do have a lifetime warranty on the frame AND the concept store may be able to demo the bike you are thinking of buying with a small deposit. Canyon will be cheaper for the spec and so will Halfords but will you be sure of getting the right size without trying?

Also, for bikes with air suspension you have to budget £20 to 30 for a shock pump to adjust the forks.
