Cyclists!
My rural commute means that there aren't too may opportunities to pass other cyclists. However coming up silently from behind (???) on unsuspecting cyclists with a loud Cheery "Hello" or "Coming through" seems to frighten the poor little blinders off their bike. One poor bloke who I only pass on a very quiet country road just outside of home in the dark at around 2300 hours nearly falls off. Got him 3 times in as many months.

Why not just put yer blues and twos on ? xx(

I had that done to me, a week or two ago. I was not best pleased. xx(

An ambulance was coming up behind me, blues flashing but no siren, just as I was coming to a roundabout. When it was a few yards behind me the driver decided at that moment to flip on the siren. I was already aware of his approach and attempting to get out of the way, to say he startled me would be putting it mildly. I can thank providence I didn't become another of his passengers.

OTOH I had some nobber of a cop turn them on right next to two of my very nervous and new students on skates, who promptly fell over. He and all of his mates were really pissed off when I asked him for his badge number. I'm still annoyed with myself for not taking the complaint further, because they could easily have caused serious injury to those students.

I was told when I got my new bike last week that retailers are legally obliged to fix all sold bikes with a bell.

thats different to them being legally obliged to stay on there tho. shops are legally obliged to sell long sleeve shirts with long sleeves, if you cut them off when you get home.......

Interseting debate BM & Arch.

As they're for faster moving people on paths etc, should joggers be fitted with a bell too?

Possibly a silly point but in real terms how much faster do you have to be going to necessitate a little 'ting ting' noise as opposed to 'hello, jogger coming through on the left'

I don't use a bell, partly because my bars have lots of other bits of paraphenalia and theres not much room on them, partly because a bell in non directional, whereas, 'morning, coming through on your right' is a friendly greeting and lets the person know exactly where you'll be coming at them from. I ally this with slowing down a touch and if dogs are there, watching them and giving priority to their moves.

I've never had anyone complain at me, received many good mornings back, never had a dog problem and if anyone did ask me where my bell was I'd explain that with my voice I could let them know left or right and avoid hitting them if we both went the same way.

I also think they're a bit impersonal and rude as our version of the car horn.

FNRttC to Wittering. Twentytwo of us, travelling more or less together, take the smooth climb up to Rockwoods. It's about three thirty in the morning. Ahead, a lonely cyclist meanders gently homeward, a little the better for drink. What he thought as all twentytwo of us steamed past is anybody's guess
