This might sound ridiculous but what is a tyre boot? Heard of them but don't have one or yet needed one. Thanks Gerry

My Genesis has a rear rack fitted so my usual saddle wedge would not fit. So I cobbled together another tool bag from all my odds 'n' sods; that'll teach me! Have since bought a Topeak Pocket Rocket mini pump and Park glueless patches. I have also now 'found' the right sized inner tubes. Have never considered CO2 what are the pros/cons?

@dave.r good point about the difference between tools used at home and those on the road. I once had a box spanner that was made from cheese ;)

A tyre boot is to put between your now faulty tyre and the inner tube to add strength to the wall of the tyre so that when the inner tube is inflated it does not find its way out via a weakness in the tyre, typically a small gash or 'weak spot' on the tyre that is not bad enough to prevent you getting home but needs a new tyre sooner rather than later.
You do need to be careful with them though because a) they are a bugger to get in place properly and b) if left in situ for any length of time can cause another flat tyre where their edges rub again the inner tube (this happened to my OH on tour after around 4,000km - we forgot we had one fitted and the Schwalbe inner tube finally failed. We replaced it with a cheaper inner tube which lasted all of 2 days before it failed in the exactly the same way at the same point...)

Thanks for that, sounds quite tricky to use in all but the worst of cases. I might manage to squeeze a small segment in my saddle bag but tyres are new Winter ones at moment. Thanks again. Gerry

its a small section of old tyre that can be put between the tyre and tube to stop the tube bulging out through a damaged section of tyre so you can get home, typically you put the replacement tube in, inflate it and it bulges out through the damage on the tyre then goes bang a few yards up the road so you put in a tyre boot to stop that happening.
When I destroyed my rear Race Lite on a large piece of debris on my way back from Banbury last summer it was a tyre boot that got me home, the debris destroyed the inner tube, snake bite puncture, and left a gash in the side wall of the tyre.
These pictures aren't great but you can see the two holes in the tube and the gash in the tyre.

Looks quite tricky to cram a piece of tyre between tube and damaged tyre. I struggle to get my Marathon pluses on with a deflated tube as it is! You live and learn. Thanks Gerry

Duct/duct tape will also do the job. It stays where you stick it. I had an inner tube explode and separate 2.5 inches of tyre from the bead. Duct tape effected a suitably robust repair to last for five miles and see me back to my car. I rode rather gingerly with a reduced tyre pressure.

You should have called BicycleRepairMan.

Fail to prepare and prepare to fail.

Why didn't you call the wife to come and pick you up?

I've no chance of the wife bailing me out, she doesn't drive.
