Ahh you cycle through Repton, that brings back some memories. I used to love that computer game!! presumably there are no diamonds to find on your route?

Seriously though that looks like a great route. Lots of scope for extending it through lovely countryside.

Yup it is great to ride this road , except at 6 am on the way to work when everyone is doing maybe 60 on unlit roads  and it is a 454 foot of climbing

I do extend to the route when i have time +inclination .

And as for diamonds
well Repton is the home for a very big private school (ala clarkson) so i imagine they all walk round with diamond encrusted bags

Its pitch black even now

Use a tesco 3 watt size c torch and a 1 watt light from Edinburgh cycles on the front and i can see ok although i am tempted to get another torch.

I have slowed down a bit going to work maybe cos it it a bit dark.

I can go via burton but the road leading onto the cycle path on the a 38 i have been knocked off before now by the draft of passing lorries.I think dark and safer vs light and dead wins .

Edit : toes are a lot better just need some shoes without mesh in , only have a pair of summer shoes so hoping for santa to bring some and its been 3-4 degrees in the morning .I have asked for money and may try to look for a roady on ebay, but i will be mad and put a rack on it so rack points/ p-clips are a must

I am not pc techie enough to work out how to post a pic of a web page though..........

Out of interest, how come you choose to go along the A511 instead of turning left onto Thorn Tree Lane and thus cutting the corner? At the other end of your commute you could cut another corner by going straight up Ewell Rd and round the roundabout then along the minor road parallel to the A38 instead of turning left then right up the A38, although maybe that roundabout is hazardous for cyclists.

Yep that's just what I thought. Must be some local thing not obvious from the map to prevent this. I'll avoid A roads at all costs- farm tracks, bridleways- the lot, just to get away from fecking cars

I actually go on the cycle path that runs on the A38 as i work at toyota

So i avoid the roundabout completely as i enter the factory via the gate about 400 yards? past the slip road onto the A38 coming over the roundabout .It is hard to show on the map and thats why you will see if you look closely the route is not on the road and crosses the slip roads.

And that parallel road on the A38? thats our own road that goes onto the roundabout and is gridlocked most of the time .

If i go up ewell road i hit the roundabout and its a 3 laner with people lane hopping willy nilly especially at shift change when about 1000 work mates all try to get onto it.

Thorntree road is an unadopted road at the top end and is pothole city and unlit. my dad looked at buying a house up there but no one wanted to even consider sharing the cost of buying some gravel. The exit onto the A511 is also dicey as you need to turn left then straight right .

Aha, that explains it! Good mapping site by the way- I tried plotting my commute though, it wouldn't let me as it doesn't recognise farm tracks and old railway lines- it kept bunging my route onto the nearest road- maybe I'm doing something wrong.

This probably won't work, but I'll try to put my commute from Google Earth over about 4 pictures on this post.

Ah, that explains it.

That bikehike site looks excellent. Here is my commute:

I usually do this four times per week, but have recently been able to do it every working day.

One day a week I play bridge in Dorking and cycle there straight after work:
